When Activists Mobilize Images in Moscow: Communication or Participation?

Video cameras and other digital devices are widely used in Russia today, as they are elsewhere. Activists can shoot their actions and report the events on the Internet, even if the mainstream media provide no coverage or only negative reporting. By analyzing the production, the grammar of filming, and the use of images produced by activists who campaigned against the plan to build a freeway through nearby Khimki Forest on the Moscow outskirts, this paper explores the advantages and limitations of this digital visual voice for political action and protest groups in Russia.
