As the crisis of representative government deepens, sortition has been thrust firmly back into the limelight. After an era of deliberative mini-publics that failed to create systemic political changes, a second wave of democratic innovations is emerging. These devices, more empowered and institutionalized, are connecting with various forms of participative, representative, and direct democracy. But they spell contrasting dynamics for the future, between a radicalization of democracy and a legitimation of representative government.
