The experience of poverty is usually considered as field data that allows experts to develop models of analysis and interpretation. Based on participatory research that involved people experiencing poverty as co-researchers, and drawing on John Dewey’s pragmatist epistemology, this article analyzes the conditions that allow the experience of poverty to be considered as specific knowledge. The consequences of this recognition are specified both in terms of knowledge creation and the capacity to transform reality. The research carried out thus belongs to the field of radical epistemologies.
